Naturally, there is better and worse ways of marketing your business, but the worst way of all is not to market at all! Yes, it’s true: if you want to grow your business, there is no BIGGER mistake you could possibly make than to neglect your marketing.

I do realize that marketing is an angst word for most small business owners, I really do get that, but to me it is no more than getting the word out that you exist and that you have a solution to a certain problem.

They can’t buy from you if they don’t know you exist!

And they will buy, so they’ll just end up buying from somebody else. And that is not only bad for your business (and your life), but it’s also bad for them, because they won’t get as good a service or product from your competitor!

You do have the best product or service for miles around, right? (Because if YOU don’t believe that, NOBODY else will!)

But let’s get back to what we were chatting about before, our most precious resource: Time!

Starting a new business is extremely time consuming. There are so many things to do and consider, new learnings to take on board, staff to employ and lead, money to invest… Last but not least getting paying customers into your business.

Starting your own business is an exciting, yet scary step to take, and once taken you’re in head over heels. You start working ridiculous hours to get everything done (just for the time being of course, because in a couple of months time, it will get easier…). But not just that, on top of all of  that you also start thinking about your business all the time, even dreaming of it at night…that’s if you can still find sleep in the first place.

Believe me, I know what I am talking about: I’ve been there, done that.

You’ve entered a vicious circle, because by now you’ve invested a lot of money into this business of yours, you’ve worked incredibly hard to get where you are, and where you are is: exhausted, just keeping your head above water financially… and working harder than ever before.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

Your health is starting to suffer. You are secretly worried about your sanity. But you can’t give up now, because you have invested too much (and not just financially). So on you go….

Many small business owners are in a symbiotic relationship with their businesses: the business can’t live without them, and they can’t live without their business (financially as well as emotionally). To improve the way your business works, you have to start taking a step back, and adopt a bird’s eye perspective. But first…

Let me ask you this: If I gave you 10 hours for every hour you invested in working ON your business, rather than IN your business, would you make the time to do it?

Step 1: Time Management

If there was ONE key to success in business, it would be managing your time.

We all have the same amount of time available in one day. The question is: are we using it wisely?

To be a successful time manager you have to spend an hour getting total clarity on how you are currently spending your time. I challenge you to keep a time journal for just 1 week (to start with). It’s going to take you under 1 hour to write down what you do every day and how long you take to do it.

Once you know HOW you spend your time, you must prioritize your actions and apply the four Ds of Time Management (Do – Don’t – Delegate –Delay).

One of the most important questions that you can ask yourself in terms of your Business is:

Which of my actions actually create profits, or bring in money?

(For example in any Sales-based Business, this would be time spent talking to prospects or clients.)

Whatever you do on a daily basis in terms of running your business, the things that create profits have to assume TOP priority. In fact, if you can double the amount of time spent taking just those actions that make the money…you can double your income! It’s as simple as that.

Once you have created some extra time by improving your time management, it’s time to take a step back from the business to look at the business from a bird’s eye view.

Plant a Flag: What does your business have to look like to give you the life that you want?

Step 2: Action, Direction, Vision….

If you are like 98% of all small business owners, then you are currently spending 90% of your time in the Action department, 9.9% in the Direction Department and 0.1% in the Vision department (that’s at night, in your dreams…).

The difference between ‘business’ and ‘busyness’ is far more than just one letter…

‘Action’ is what keeps you busy and running around on day-to-day basis; it’s the stuff that needs to be done to keep the business going. And that’s all it does, it keeps business going…and yourself running around. It does nothing to create an even better, more profitable and more sustainable business in the long-term.

‘Direction’ is what you do to improve your business in the short term (90 days or so). It’s getting more, bigger clients that create more income, it’s investing in a new piece of machinery or an improved website. It’s the things you do that involve a bit of planning and foresight. These actually make your business better, but they don’t do a lot in terms of creating a better life, too.

‘Vision’ is what drove you to start your own business in the first place. It’s how you imagined it to be, what you dream of at night (and sometimes during the day…if you get the chance). ‘Vision’ is the flag planted in the ground that you are heading towards, the bigger picture, it’s how you want ‘it’ to be. ‘It’ must include your life AND your business, if you want to be more than just successful, if you want to feel fulfilled as well.

Planting your flag and creating your vision, your destination will only take you a couple of hours, but it can change your business completely. Step 3: Refocus on the actions that actually increase your profit

The biggest challenge for most Small Business Owners that I talk to is: attracting new customers to their business. Yet on further questioning most of them will admit that they don’t market their business consistently if at all.

And that’s perfectly natural for at least two reasons:

Firstly, marketing costs money and if done incorrectly there is always the danger of wasting your precious resources.

Secondly, most of you haven’t gone into business, because you were great at Sales and Marketing. In fact, most of you probably have a serious distaste for Sales and Marketing. Again, that’s perfectly natural, it’s the way we have been brought up.

So, the third step in the system is to look at your online and offline presence, redevelop your online presence for you to get the maximum benefit out of it and thereby increase your business profits whilst you are sleeping.
